Lebanon and other things

So, where to start...

Guess from the beginning.

Months ago (I think almost a year ago) I met a girl on the message board on www.jeanettewinterson.com. Well, to be precise, she met me.

We made very good friends in a quite disfunctional way.

She's one of the most important persons in my current life and as you can imagine I care for her happiness and health.

Little detail: she's from Lebanon.

Maybe her nationality is one of the main reasons why we become friends: I think I learnt the meaning of the word "war" when I was 5 and listened to the news about what was happening in Beyrut during 1983.

She's from Beyrut.

And I am sure many of you know what is happening to Lebanon and to its people at the moment, as I type this post.

I know you all know about my view on politics and I know some of you might be offended by this post and maybe even more if I posted what I really want to say.

I just think this can help and I hope some of you decide to sign this:

I don't want to start a political debate. I'm too hurt at the moment.
But this is about civilians and I hope you share a bit of concern about children or mothers with me.

My friend - her name is Joumana which means Pearl - is ok as ok can be, she had to give up her job as copywriter and she is now working for a NGO who helps refugees. She tells me about her work. I have a link to send money to the NGO she works for, but I am not bothering you posting calls for money here.

I know her NGO is trustworthy: the chief has been recently interviewed by BBC.

Thanks. I didn't know that's what Joumana meant. I've a Palestinian friend by that name. Tell her my thoughts and prayers are with her, and the people in the area.

This is the reason why she and her family don't want to leave the country (well, at the moment it would be impossible by the way): her father is an aging University professor, he is already a refugee, he doesn't want to leave the home he has built after losing his true one.

I have no idea how it feels, going to sleep hearing planes revving on your head.

The only thing I know is I got a txt message on my phone at 2 am two nights ago (I was up working, she was just up scared, and we spent some time together txting silly things to cheer each other up) but I haven't received any txt lately. I just hope she ran out of credit or she is overworking (which undoubtedly is) cause if telecommunications are destroyed I will lose contact.

Cross your fingers.
